Doors open to La Pluma's
computer lab: La Pluma holds grand opening
April 18, 2002 -- Chris
Pflanzer could barely contain his excitement as he stood looking at
the 32 computers in La Pluma Elementary School's new computer lab,
which he nearly single-handedly created by refurbishing used
machines.
"I'm ecstatic," the La Mirada resident said. "This
is like Christmas morning. This is the culmination of a dream."
Not quite. Already, Pflanzer has a new dream: providing 100
refurbished computers a month to schools across Southern California.
On Wednesday, however, the celebration was all about La Pluma
school in La Mirada, where officials and about 640 students attended
a grand opening for the new lab.
"This means that (students) will have another learning
tool," Principal Rob Williams said.
Each computer is programmed with Scholastic Reading Counts and
Math Steps educational software, he said.
Williams said he is impressed with what Pflanzer has done for La
Pluma.
"It's been pretty amazing," Williams said. "He's
really run the show himself. He's taken on every aspect of this
project -- all the way from hunting down the machines to getting
them refurbished and bringing them onto campus."
The computers in the lab range in speed from Pentium 75 to
Pentium 233 megahertz and have hard drives ranging from 550
megabytes to 3 gigabytes.
Much of the equipment donated to La Pluma came from So Cal
Recycling and Cerritos College. And donations keep coming in,
Pflanzer said. That's one reason he has decided to help other
schools.
"Every day in California, 6,000 computers are thrown
away," he said.
Pflanzer is still accepting donated computers. He can be reached
